Considerations When Choosing a Type of Tile

If you’re new to tiling, the sheer variety of options available can be overwhelming. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are among the most popular choices, but there are also glass, cement, metal, and stone tiles to consider, each with its unique characteristics and applications. The challenge is further compounded by the need to select tiles that not only suit the specific requirements of your project but also fit within your budget.

To simplify your decision-making process, we’ve consulted with experts to provide a comprehensive overview of the 12 most common types of floor and wall tiles. Whether you’re working on an immediate renovation or planning for future projects, this guide will help you navigate the options and choose the best tiles for your needs. By understanding the strengths and applications of each tile type, you can ensure a successful remodel that will enhance your space and stand the test of time.

Before diving into choosing a type of tile, you need to thin

COLOUR

The colour of your tile plays a crucial role in setting the mood for a space. If you're aiming to lighten up a room, opt for lighter tiles. Conversely, if you want to create a warmer, cozier atmosphere, darker tiles are a better choice. Keep in mind that lighter tiles tend to show debris and scuffs more easily, requiring more frequent cleaning compared to darker tiles.

Bold patterns or bright tiles can inject personality into a dull bathroom or enliven a kitchen. However, be mindful when choosing these options; since you’ll live with the design for a long time, selecting something too trendy could backfire. You don't want to end up tiring of the pattern and having to redo the tiling sooner than expected.

SIZE

The size of your tiles can significantly impact the appearance of your room. Larger tiles can create a sense of spaciousness, making a room appear larger, while smaller tiles might have the opposite effect. However, smaller tiles can also add a cozy, intimate feel to a space. Tiles are available in various thicknesses, each suited to different applications. Floor tiles are generally the thickest, ranging from 1/2 to 3/4 inch in thickness. Wall tiles are thinner, typically between 1/4 and 3/8 inch thick, and are commonly found in three- to six-inch squares. Mosaic tiles, a distinct category, are usually around two inches in size and about 1/8 inch thick.

Rating and Grading

When selecting tiles, two crucial factors to consider are their rating and grading, both provided by the Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI), which evaluates the quality of enamel products across North America.

Rating assesses a tile's hardness and its ability to withstand foot traffic. PEI ratings range from 0 to 5: 0 indicates the most delicate tiles, suitable for walls or low-traffic areas, while 5 represents the most durable tiles, capable of handling heavy foot traffic.

Grading evaluates the overall quality and appearance of the tile. Grade 1 tiles are virtually flawless, Grade 2 tiles have some imperfections, and Grade 3 tiles are typically thinner and designed for wall applications.

Material

The final consideration when selecting tiles is the material. Tiles come in various materials, each offering unique characteristics and advantages:

  • Ceramic Tiles: Versatile and available in many colors and patterns, ceramic tiles are durable and suitable for both floors and walls. They are generally softer than porcelain tiles.
  • Porcelain Tiles: A refined type of ceramic tile, porcelain is denser and more durable, with high resistance to moisture and stains, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.
  • Glass Tiles: Known for their reflective quality and vibrant appearance, glass tiles are often used for decorative accents on walls. They are resistant to stains and moisture but can be challenging to install.
  • Marble Tiles: Valued for their natural beauty and unique patterns, marble tiles add elegance and luxury to any space. They require regular sealing to prevent staining and damage from moisture.
  • Granite Tiles: Known for their strength and durability, granite tiles offer a polished, luxurious look. They are resistant to scratches and stains, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.
  • Natural Stone Tiles: Includes materials like limestone, travertine, and slate. Natural stone tiles offer a unique, earthy appearance and high durability but may require sealing to protect against stains and moisture.

Ceramic Tilee

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic tile is a versatile and popular choice for a wide range of home improvement projects due to its affordability and durability. It is well-suited for various rooms, including bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways. Glazed ceramic tile, in particular, provides enhanced protection against stains and damage compared to other flooring options like wood, carpet, or vinyl plank flooring. This makes it an ideal choice for both residential and commercial spaces.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles are a premium type of ceramic tile, crafted from a higher ratio of silica and quartz and fired at elevated temperatures, which makes them more durable and often more expensive than traditional red clay ceramic tiles. Their versatility is notable, as they come in various colors and patterns that can mimic materials such as hardwood, marble, or industrial bricks. However, the increased density and strength of porcelain tiles can make DIY installation more challenging, requiring specialized tools like a diamond blade wet saw to handle the material effectively.

Glass Tile

Porcelain Tile

Marble Tile

Sparkling glass tiles are an elegant choice for backsplashes or shower walls, renowned for their exceptional stain resistance, including against red wine and acidic lemon juice. While they provide a sophisticated and durable surface, they are prone to chipping or cracking if heavy objects are dropped on them. Consequently, glass tiles are best suited for vertical applications where they can enhance the aesthetic appeal without the risk of damage from high-traffic use.

Marble Tile

Natural Stone Tile

Marble Tile

Marble is often regarded as a premium natural stone tile material, renowned for its elegance and distinctive beauty. Created under immense heat and pressure, marble boasts deep, intricate veining that adds a level of sophistication and drama unmatched by other materials. Its natural depth and contrast, combined with a dazzling array of color veining, make marble a standout choice for elevating any space. Available in a range of colors, including green, gray, beige, white, and black, marble tiles offer a timeless appeal. When selecting marble tiles or slabs, it is crucial to inspect them carefully to ensure consistency and quality.

Granite Tile

Natural Stone Tile

Natural Stone Tile

Granite, with its natural specks and flecks of color, is a robust and elegant choice for both countertops and flooring. Significantly harder than marble, granite is more resistant to chips and cracks, making it a durable option for high-traffic areas. Its relative waterproofness ensures that granite performs well in wet environments, as it resists moisture and staining. Typically available in larger format slabs, granite is a premium material that may not fit every budget but offers exceptional performance and timeless beauty.

Natural Stone Tile

Natural Stone Tile

Marble and granite are not the only natural stone options for tile. Slate, limestone, travertine, and sandstone also offer distinctive beauty and character. However, these stones are porous and require regular sealing to protect against stains and discoloration, particularly when used for flooring inside your home. Despite this, they remain excellent choices for various home projects, providing unique textures and aesthetic appeal.

HOW TO CARE AND MANTAIN

While natural stone tiles require regular resealing, tile flooring is otherwise very easy to maintain. Unlike hardwood or carpet, tile can be wet-mopped and cleaned with bleach, making it simple to handle spills and stains.
